Lower Your Health Insurance Deductible

Health insurance is a wildly debated subject around the nation. It seems that every time you turn on the television or go on your computer, there is another debate raging on some topic regarding health insurance and the many aspects of what it offers and doesn’t offer people around the nation.

Of all the debated topics, one that usually stands out from the rest of the pack is the issue of insurance health deductibles. Why is my deductible so high? Why doesn’t my insurance deductible cover a certain aspect of my insurance? These questions and others are some that are always being asked. Here are some helpful tips regarding how you can lower your health insurance deductible.

Keep Yourself Healthy

As silly as this sounds – and yes we know that it is sometimes not as easy as it sounds, keeping yourself healthy can directly affect the price of your deductible. If you stay healthy then you will be able to take advantage of lowering your deductible based on your overall health.

Stop Smoking

In an ideal world you would be a non-smoker, and for those of you who are, congratulations. The fact of the matter is that many people are smokers, and that plays a direct part in the amount of health insurance deductible you are going to pay. Any health related insurance agency will automatically raise your deductible if you are a smoker. An great way to get your deductible down some is to quit smoking altogether.

HMO or PPO

If you are like most people in America, then you want the freedom to choose your own physician. The fact of the matter is that having a PPO (choose your own physician) will more often than not carry a higher deductible than having a HMO (same coverage, can’t choose your physician). If you want to carry a lower deductible, then go ahead and choose HMO, coverage is just as good, as there are excellent physicians all around.

Utilize Group Insurance Plans

If you are able to take advantage of a group insurance plan, then you should think about looking into it. If you are married and you and your spouse have a couple of different health coverage choices, then go over your options and figure out which group plan covers you the best and offers the lowest deductible.

Reassess Every Year

Life moves at a pretty rapid pace. You may not think so sometimes, but more often than not you will blink your eyes and realize that an entire year has gone by. You reassess other parts of your life every year, so why not reassess your health coverage situation? You may need more coverage for something, but at the same time you may need less coverage for something. Reassessing your health insurance on a yearly basis will more often than not provide you with the opportunity to lower your deductible some.

Health insurance is something that everyone needs, whether they can afford it or not. It is important that you are covered, but at the same time it is also important that you are taking steps to lower your deductible. Whether you believe it or not, it is very possible to gain excellent coverage, while paying a fair deductible that won’t leave you with no money in the bank for anything else.
